Dave's Dried Peas

High protein snacks are a very common problem for weight loss patients, aka gastric bypass patients, Roux-en-Y, intestinal bypass patients, etc. Foods "labeled" for weight lost patients tend to be higher in price and more difficult to locate. Dried peas , commonly misspelled as dryed peas, are an excellent source of high protein, having 6 grams or protein in 1/4 cup. This means that one pound, volume of 4 1/2 cups, has 108 grams or more of protein.  Dried peas are crunchy (most crunchy foods tend to be high in fats or sugars), slightly salted, a green veggie--which is the best kind, they fit into a small zip lock bag for portability, and no refrigeration is required. Other snack foods tend to be high in sugars, fats, or contain a lot of calories.

My wife had a RNY revision from a 1980 gastric bypass for weight loss. That surgery needed revision in mid 2007 due to major issues that were affecting her body. Once the surgery was completed, food then became the problem. She had a hard time swallowing foods. Her intestines had atrophied from the diameter of your thumb to the diameter of your little finger, making it difficult to pass anything through these small intestines. I had to find a source of protein, as she hated protein shakes. Then, I found these, DRIED PEAS.  She eats them all day long. She could chew them up into small pieces very easily, that passed through her system with very little discomfort.  I know that more than half of the protein she get is from these dried peas, and she passed her lab work several months ago. I was especially worried about protein levels, but they came out normal. So, DRIED PEAS DO PROVIDE GOOD PROTEIN.

But searching around the Internet, the pricing is quite high for dried peas. I've seen prices of $3.69 for 4.5 oz, $8.69 for 9.5 oz, $11.95 a pound etc, PLUS SHIPPING costs.   I'm dealing with a local nutritional store wholesaler, and I am able to offer them for $5 a pound, plus shipping. PayPal will be the payment needed. Credit cards or postal money orders also accepted, as explained below. Up to 7 one pound bags can be placed in a standard flat rate mailing box to save on shipment costs. Get together with a friend or two and order a box of 7 bags to save on shipping !!  Save even more money on shipping with the new flat rate box that can can hold up to 12 one pound bags of dried peas.

This is a photo of a one pound bag of peas. The pen is placed by a common store ziplock baggy of dried peas to show the volume of dried peas in one pound. This bag has 4 1/2 cups of dried peas, contained in a zipper locked bag, the same way it would be shipped.  Dave's Dried Peas are packed in re-closable 8" x 10" bags (larger than bag shown), 2 mil thick, and meet USDA and FDA requirements for food items.

Health facts from www.whfoods.com about dried peas:

"Dried peas, a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, are a very good source of cholesterol-lowering fiber. Not only can dried peas help lower cholesterol, they are also of special benefit in managing blood-sugar disorders since their high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising rapidly after a meal.   Fiber is far from all that dried peas have to offer. Dried peas also provide good to excellent amounts of four important minerals, two B-vitamins, and protein--all with virtually no fat. As if this weren't enough, dried peas also feature isoflavones (notably daidzein). Isoflavones are phytonutrients that can act like weak estrogens in the body and whose dietary consumption has been linked to a reduced risk of certain health conditions, including breast and prostate cancer.......Dried peas, like other legumes, are rich in soluble fiber. Soluble fiber forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract that binds bile (which contains cholesterol) and carries it out of the body. Research studies have shown that insoluble fiber not only helps to increase stool bulk and prevent constipation, but also helps prevent digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis.....In addition to its beneficial effects on the digestive system and the heart, soluble fiber helps stabilize blood sugar levels. If you have insulin resistance, hypoglycemia or diabetes, legumes like dried peas can really help you balance blood sugar levels while providing steady, slow-burning energy. Studies of high fiber diets and blood sugar levels have shown the dramatic benefits provided by these high fiber foods. Researchers compared two groups of people with type 2 diabetes who were fed different amounts of high fiber foods. One group ate the standard American Diabetic diet, which contains 24 grams of fiber/day, while the other group ate a diet containing 50 grams of fiber/day. Those who ate the diet higher in fiber had lower levels of both plasma glucose (blood sugar) and insulin (the hormone that helps blood sugar get into cells). The high fiber group also reduced their total cholesterol by nearly 7%, their triglyceride levels by 10.2% and their VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein--the most dangerous form of cholesterol) by 12.5%.... In addition to their stellar fiber content, dried peas also feature other heart healthy nutrients. They are a good source of potassium,  which may decrease the growth and development of blood vessel plaques and is also good for lowering high blood pressure....Dried peas are an excellent source of the trace mineral, molybdenum, an integral component of the enzyme sulfite oxidase, which is responsible for detoxifying sulfites. Sulfites are a type of preservative commonly added to prepared foods like delicatessen salads and salad bars. Persons who are sensitive to sulfites in these foods may experience rapid heartbeat, headache or disorientation if sulfites are unwittingly consumed. If you have ever reacted to sulfites, it may be because your molybdenum stores are insufficient to detoxify them.  When fresh peas are not available or when you want to enjoy a starchier, hardier flavored legume, dried peas are perfect..."

So Dried Peas not only taste good, but they are also very healthy for you.

This is a quick photo of me before and after RNY surgery. I'm a strong advocate for healthy ways of living, even if they require surgery. At my pre op weight of 345, life was way too difficult.  I'm currently 189 pounds and I've always strived to find good sources of protein for maximum health after surgery. Dried peas is one of those great finds I though I would share with everyone. Each time I tell people at local weigh loss support meetings, people are curious on where to find them. Now it's easy, just come to this web site. If you have any questions you'd like answered, please feel free to call me at 951-846-9179.
